BEST: Please introduce yourself.
My name is Kagiso Mogwere. I am a recording artist that goes by the name KAGGIESOUL. I’m from Leondale, in the East of Johannesburg.

BEST: What is your music background?
KGS: I am a singer/songwriter. I am the lead vocalist at “AudioFlo Media.” I co-produce my own material and consult on other artists’ projects. I am currently learning to compose.

BEST: Do you write your own songs?
KGS: Yes, I write my own songs.

BEST: Who are your musical influences?
KGS: Mariah Carey, Floetry, Meshell Ndegeocello, Aretha Franklin, Letta Mbulu, Miriam Makeba, Thandiswa Mazwai, Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, India Arie, Sibongile Khumalo Ashanti, Aaliyah, Mary J Blige, Keiko Maitsui, Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Nina Simone, and I could go on forever… There are just too many.

BEST: What are your fondest musical memories?
KGS: Listening to music with my family was the best – I learnt a lot about who my parents and brother are through the music they listened to. My cousin has been in different choral groups and that opened me up to different music and people from all over the Kathorus (Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus) region and man, it was dope. I experienced a lot of hip hop sessions back when the rappers Reason, (he was Reason The Mad Massacre) Kwesta, Episode and Arc had a movement going with called “4ThaKids” and they’d rip it hard! Music has always been apart of me, I’ve been able get through the best and the worst times of my life with music. Be it hip hop, pop, rock, as long as that beat drops I’m down.

BEST: What are your songs about?
KGS: My songs are about love, light, and life – consciousness. They are about self-discovery.

BEST: What does “Women’s Month” mean to you?
KGS: It’s an acknowledgment of women’s empowerment – their enduring strength. It’s a celebration of women coming together commanding equal respect, inspiring each other to keep the fire burning be it at home or work or anywhere in society in fact.

BEST: How is it breaking into the industry as a female artist?
KGS: I’d imagine that with any industry it’s tough to crack, no matter what your gender. Experience has taught me that, you need a good team, a good structure and a helluva support!! I’m fortunate to have a solid team that understands my vision and is able to help me execute my goals.

BEST: Are you new to the scene? How would you describe your music to people?
KGS: I am fairly new to the scene, as a singer though. I would describe my music as Neo-Soul, with hip-hop influences, Deep House Vocals, just a variety of genres.

BEST: Have you recorded any other projects before or posted any music online?
KGS: ¬†“Peace Is OF Me.” is my first solid project. It’s an introductory EP to KaggieSoul. I have posted some material online and you could find those tracks on our AudioFlo SoundCloud and Facebook pages respectively.

BEST: What are your immediate music career goals?
KGS: Introducing people to KaggieSoul’s music, garner as much attention as I possibly can, record more music and perform more.

BEST: What are your long-term career goals?
KGS: I would like to be considered amongst the best singer/songwriter/composers. I’d like to be internationally recognised for my heart.

BEST: Advice for all the ladies out there?
KGS: Love yourself first and make no apologies for that. You’re strong enough to get through anything as long as you’re willing to try. It’s a difficult journey but it’s yours and you need to know that your strength, your love, courage and faith will pull you through.
