The House Educator

We heard this brother on the TV show Hit Refresh, blown away with track selection had us jamming till the early hours. Blanka Mazimela is his name, also know as The House Educator one of Soul Candi’s finest.

Best: Where are you from and do they love your music where you from?

Blanka: I’m from iDutywa in the Eastern Cape. Music is part of everything where I’m from literally everything.

Best: When did you start Djing?

Blanka: Started DJing in 2005

Best: So when did you decide that this was no longer a hobby and that you would make it your career?

Blanka: From the beginning I knew i wanted this to be a career but I’ve always been strategic about my placement and what value i bring to the scene.I want to take this overseas.

Best: So what do you think sets you apart from the rest? I mean, what’s the difference between a DJ and you?

Blanka: I think the biggest difference about me is my authenticity. This might sound cliche but the music is about me and i make sure that i get that across as far as I can. I put quite a lot of effort in what/how/where i play and I’m quite fussy about the quality of my show therefore its not just a wake up and go play type of thing.

Best: What is it like when you look out at the crowd?

Blanka: I always have one question before i go on stage. ‘How are we gonna make this work?’ and then everything goes well.
Best: where did/do you get inspiration from?

Blanka: Mostly from the people around me. I’m very spiritual so i throw some bones before i go on stage lol *Joking!

Best: Do you get nervous before you go on stage?

Blanka: The day i stop being nervous before any show is the day i stop music. Nerves are a sign of preparation.

Best  What is the biggest crowd that you have ever played for?

Blanka: I’m not sure I’ve played for about 10 000+ crowds quite a few times i’m really not sure which one was the biggest. I think Rocking The Daisies was a big one

Best: What is the greatest gig that you’ve played?

Blanka: Quite a few, Rocking The Daisies, We Love Summer, Its Personal, Mthatha Lounge, Caprice Pool Party

Best: How has the house scene changed since you started djing?

Blanka: There have been  quite a lot of technological advances through the years and I think this has had a major improvement on the overall scene. SL 1200 used to be the business back then but nowadays a memory stick can also be the business.

Best: Now you are legend have plenty women who thrown themselves at you?

Blanka: I honestly don’t have the time for that. Playing my music is my thing and i’m no where near legendary status. The day i play on the moon is the day i reach my legendary status and this is me not being modest now i’d really love to play on the moon.

Best: Is being a Dj lucrative?

Blanka: Very lucrative if you play it smart.

Best: What other businesses are you involved in?

Blanka: I’m a educational content specialist/ educationalist. I produce educational content for Soul Candi & Boston City Campus for the various courses offered around the country.

Best: How many studio albums do you have if not are you looking to release
anything in the future?

Blanka: I haven’t as yet released an album and I plan to release two albums in my lifetime. One album for me and another for the people.

Best: Is there any artist you wish to work with in our industry?

Blanka: Zonke & Oliver Mtukudzi. If you have contacts for these people please let me know.

Best: How do you think music you play has changed over the years?

Blanka: It’s gotten so much better over the years. I play what i like today really.

Best: Are you big into social media. how many twitter followers?

Blanka: lol my social media is growing. I’m not so big on “twitterness” I honestly don’t understand why but there’s something about twitter that doesn’t gel so much for me.

Best: What is your advice to up and coming DJs?

Blanka: ‘Do you booboo’ honestly and sincerely ‘Once your comfortable in your skin then going out there will be the easiest thing you have to do’

Blanka 6
Best: If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

Blanka: Either doing Forensic account analysis or being a CA side by side with Wandile lol 🙂
