After a long night at the pub, a walk home and a late snack. The television speakers blasting some sweet soulful sounds, my new favourite Friday night tv show Hit Refresh. This dude is on the decks and straight mashing up the tunes, Dj Boere was serving up nostalgia.
Best: Where are you from and do they love your music where you from?
Dj Boere : I’m born and raised in Mamelodi, Pretoria. About music I play.. All I can say it’s 50/50. As we all know, there’s no way we can be loved by same people as DJs/musician. Let’s say.. ‘I’m happy with those who love music I play.
Best: When did you start Djing?
Dj Boere : I started DJing from 1996
Best: So when did you decide that this was no longer a hobby and that you would make it your career?
Dj Boere : I think is after winning DJ of the month twice on YFM(Mad Half Hour) in 2003/4 if I’m not mistaken. That’s when I decided to make it career
Best: So what sets you apart from the rest? I mean, what’s the difference between any DJ and you?
Dj Boere : I think is the type of music I play and being real to my followers/fans. I don’t follow trends, been playing same type of house music since I fell in love with Soulful house even today still playing the same sound.
Best: What is it like when you look out at the crowd?
Dj Boere : Looking at the crowd.. ehhh! All I can say is, as a professional DJ you need to read crowd. Cause after all you play for them.
Best: Where do you get inspiration from?
Dj Boere : I get my inspiration from the music I collect cause I collect my music from the heart not by hype.
Best: Do you get nervous before you go on stage?
Dj Boere : Yes sometimes I do get nervous specially when playing where they don’t know you or never played before.
Best What is the biggest crowd that you have ever played for?
Dj Boere : Damn!.. I played at a lot of gigs with big crowd.
Best: What is the greatest gig that you’ve played?
Dj Boere : Ehh! Damn man. There’s too many great gigs I played at.
Best: How has the house scene changed since you started djing?
Dj Boere : The house scene changed completely.. When I started it was about music and unity. Lately it’s more about lifestyle, material(what do you have), how big are you on social media, unnecessary competition against us and beef again house music genre.
Best: Do plenty of women throw themselves at you?
Dj Boere : Hahahahaha… Women neh. Yes there are but you need to draw a line.
Best: Is being a Dj lucrative?
Dj Boere : It has its ups and down. If you are getting something from only being a DJ good for you, but you need something staple not only DJing. ‘My opinion’.
Best: What other businesses are you involved in?
Dj Boere : I do have a job and also a registered entertainment company that do events, manage DJs and renting sound.
Best: How many studio albums do you have if not are you looking to release anything in the future?
Dj Boere : I haven’t released any album yet but it is one of my dreams to release an album.
Best: Is there any artist you wish to work with in our industry?
Dj Boere : Unfortunately I’m not a producer I’m just a DJ.
Best: How do you think music you play has changed over the years?
Dj Boere : Music I play it’s still there just that it’s no longer played that much like it used to back then.
Best: Are you big into social media. how many twitter/FB followers do you have?
Dj Boere : I’m not big on social media. I think I have less then 10 thousand followers on my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Best: What is your advice to up and coming DJs?
Dj Boere : My 2 cent advice is.. Be humble. Respect. Do it with love and passion. Don’t think you are bigger than music. Appreciate your fans(they made you).. And lastly be professional
Best: If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
Dj Boere : If I wasn’t do this.. Probably I will be working 9 to 5 cause I did sound engineering at school.
