ELO DEBUTS HER ELOGRAM EP

Citing influences that vary from Thandiswa Mazwai to FKA twigs, ELO’s sound
is an experiment in melancholic, R&B influenced, electro. Soweto’s ELO,
born Lerato Sellane , first found her voice performing in her church choir
and went on to back Vusi Nova, tour Africa with her mentor Nothende and work
in administration at Universal Music, before finally finding her sound at
Tshepang Ramoba’s (of Blk Jks fame) POST POST Music stable.

March 2016 brings the release of her debut EP ELOGRAM and the start of her
international tour. A six track offering that leads with the hauntingly
utopic “Be it”. The lyrics of this song lay bare hopeful ambition and
unceasing desire to self-manifest as an artist. Listeners can expect a
steady instrumental beat with minimalistic arrangements that blend
synthesized arpeggios with soft strings and xylophone, creating an
atmosphere that oscillates between light and darkness. “Be it” will be
accompanied by ELO’s first music video; directed by the award winning Tebogo
Malope. Behind the scenes footage for the video shows a pink fantasy world
built for the songstress with the pink afro.

Notable tracks on the EP include the yearning “Make You Stay” which was
written for the film “Golden Highway”. It begins with an emotive piano
melody which introduces a graduating rhythmic section with a groovy bassline
and electronic keys. “Survive” is A percussive upbeat tempo where ELO
delivers an ever-ascending chorus over embracing warm guitars.

Her first single “Stare” released in 2015 garnered positive reviews from
Afropunk, The Key of Philadelphia and OkayAfrica who described the 2015
iTunes exclusive as “an electro-pop track carried by the newcomer’s hazy
R&B-influenced delivery…a promising and nostalgic statement about
self-acceptance built on a pumping bass progression and shimmering guitar
lines”. ELO describes it as “a song that reminds me of myself when I was
carefree, sometimes reckless yet still choosing and loving myself. So this
song takes me to a place where I watch that me and deeply want to reacquaint
myself, while the current me still is in this pit of being the good person
towards others.”

The release of ELOGRAM will be supported by an international tour which
began in Swaziland, Maputo and Durban. After the ELOGRAM EP launch ELO will
jet off to perform at SxSW 2016 as part of the South African music showcase.
June will see ELO touring Spain and France where she has received positive
media attention. ELO will end her international engagements for 2016 in
October, on a high not when she performs at CMJ music Marathon in New York
City. This is only the beginning for the petite girl with the pink afro and
a big voice.
