In celebration of the launch of the single unit version of its’ Extra Safe condom across South Africa, Durex is looking for Mzansi’s number 1 hip hop talent.
Following a series of hip hop events, which took place in Umlazi, Khayelitsha, Mamelodi, Tembisa and Soweto the Top 10 participants representing each township were shortlisted to a final, national list of 5 potential hip hop superstars.
The remaining five hopefuls will battle it out at the grand finale taking place at Chaf Pozi in Diepkloof Soweto on the 3rd of October, where judges Reason, Nadia Nakai and Dotcom will decide who will take the ultimate title of Mzansi’s number 1. The winner will travel to New York City to experience an unforgettable journey through the history and evolution of hip hop culture and enjoy performances from some of the world’s best hip hop artists at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival in July 2016.
Getting to know our Top 5
Representing Umlazi is Tshepo Nthebe aka Myndphlo. He is a producer, MC and entrepreneur with a palpable passion for music. Other areas of interest for Myndphlo include, social development and the arts.
Representing Khayelitsha, Ongeziwe Ranisi aka Reezo. He is inspired by Kendrick Lamar and describes himself as a newcomer to the game who grew up on hip hop which fuelled his aspirations to become an MC.
Gomolemeo Monama, aka Gomza, representing Mamelodi describes himself as a man of few words. He lets his art speak for him.
Representing Tembisa we have Sizwe Mthethwa, known simply as Sizwe. Originally from Swaziland, Sizwe is studying Sound Engineering at Damelin and says hip hop is his life.
And finally from Soweto is Daddy Longstem, known only by this alias, is the founder of hip hop collective called Guerilla King Music. The group boasts an impressive 35 releases in 2015 alone, three features in Hype magazine’s mixtape insert and has performed at Back to the City’s Red Bull stage.
