So what exactly is a ‘somdanger’? Robin says: “Somdanger is a slang word used by mostly township residents in South Africa describing someone who is fearless and lives life on their own terms”. For a longer definition, one needs to navigate through the lyrics of the song. But looking into Robin´s bio also helps us to understand the concept, and why he is a somdanger himself.
Coming from Umlazi, Robin Thirdfloor sparkled as a young alternative hip-hop artist in March 2014, when he self-released online the E.P Sounds Empty Pockets Make, which got more than 2.000 downloads in less than a month, going far.
Hit single Confessions got playlisted on multiple radio sta4ons including the Somdanger and uKhozi FM Top 5 Hip-hop charts. Second single Fly Away got playlisted in college radio station in Chicago (USA). Both tracks, Confessions and Fly Away, were featured on SABC 1 drama series Mutual Friends.
Robin received five nominations in the Original Material Awards 2014, in the categories of Song of the Year, Best Newcomer, MC of the Year, Best Sleeve Design, and EP of the Year. In 2015 Tshepang ‘Rambo’ Ramoba – drummer of BLK JKS and Motel Mari – signed Robin to his indie label POST POST, where he will release his new project.
In February 2016 Robin released Rolling Stone, which debuted on trend-setter portal Okay Africa. A few days later, the POST POST stable embarked on a tour with all their artists covering Durban, Johannesburg, Mozambique and Swaziland.
“My performance is crowd engaging and energetic. I make sure I occupy the audience´s attention from the first minute to the last minute of my set. Most songs of mine are very personal and you can see it in the mood I set when I’m on stage channeling the feelings of the song to the crowd therefore engaging with their own feelings.”
This approach, enriched by the experience of his first African tour set the pace for Robin´s strong live act: in April he was the closing act on the main stage at Africa’s largest hip hop festival; Back To The City Festival.
